Many folks pledge to lead a healthier life at the beginning of the New Year. As your dentist, we can get behind that. When you improve your overall health, you’ll improve your smile too!
Daily brushing and flossing are obviously important to your smile’s health – and so are regular dental exams and cleanings. Your diet plays a definite role too. In addition to cutting back on unhealthy treats like sugary soda, you should try to eat foods that actually improve the condition of your smile. This short video highlights some foods that help prevent cavities and other problems. They can even help eliminate surface stains, so your smile looks more attractive.
You should eat more:
- Apples – This fruit has two things going for it in terms of improving your dental health. It contains malic acid, a substance that increases saliva production. Saliva helps wash away remnants of food and disease-causing bacteria. An apple’s crunchy texture also helps clean your teeth.
- Broccoli – Like apples, raw broccoli can work almost like a natural “toothbrush” in helping keep teeth clean. It’s also packed with iron, which helps prevent dental problems.
- Cheese – You can actually strengthen your tooth enamel by eating cheese, since it contains calcium, phosphorus, and protein.
- Strawberries – These berries, like apples, have saliva-boosting malic acid. They also are packed with antioxidants, which are great for dental health.
