So today, I have a list of 5 myths that you need to avoid.

1. Bleeding or Swollen Gums Aren’t a Problem. MYTH

Your teeth and gums shouldn’t hurt. When anything in your mouth hurts, there is a problem. Bleeding or swollen gums are the first signs of gum disease, which is a major problem. Gum disease will affect about 75 percent of people across the world, and the serious stages of gum disease are not reversible. Gum disease is such a concern of ours because it’s the leading cause of missing teeth in adults. This infection can attack the gums and even the bone, if left untreated. Serious gum disease will cause the teeth to become loose or even fail.

2. My Teeth Don’t Hurt, So There is No Problem. MYTH

We hear this myth quite a lot. It’s people’s way to rationalizing why they skip the dentist or don’t want to visit the dentist. But judging your oral health by pain level is unwise. First off, everyone has a different pain tolerance level. Some patients have tremendous sensitivity because of a small cavity, while others have zero pain and have an obvious infection and need a root canal. It’s impossible for any medical professional to tell patients their pain tolerance. The best ways to ensure you are free of issues is by visiting the dentists once every six months, where we can cleaning and polish the teeth and check your mouth for any abnormalities.

3. Flossing Isn’t Necessary. MYTH

We dentists know that patients hate flossing. We also know whenever you don’t floss. Here is a fact I like to share with my patients about floss. About 35 percent of the tooth is located beneath the surface of the gums. Even the best toothbrush cannot clean this area entirely. The best way to clean the portion of the tooth beneath the gums is with dental floss. The next time you don’t want to floss, think about these percentages. Would you only wash 65 percent of your body in the shower? Probably not. Give your teeth the same thorough cleaning.

4. Teeth Whitening is Dangerous. MYTH

Dentists have been using teeth whitening for decades. It’s one of our best tools in cosmetic dentistry. If completed under the guidances of an oral health professional, teeth whitening is not dangerous. At Silver Leaf Dentistry, we make sure that your teeth are free of cavities and your gums are free of infection before suggesting any whitening treatments. We would never suggest a treatment that would compromise the health of your mouth. If you are considering whitening your teeth, come to our office first to see if you’re a candidate for whitening.

5. Snoring Is No Big Deal. MYTH

Loud snoring can just be simple snoring. Or it can be a sign of something larger, like sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a problem that will affect millions of people in American. It happens when people experience pauses in breathing, and this problem has been linked to serious problems like heart disease and serious weight gain. There have even been reports of people dying in their sleep from sleep apnea. If you have serious snoring problems, you can ask us about how to resolve this problem.
